Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

Due to the group nature of all of the internal standards in this course, students who have a poor attendance record or choose to take a subject that requires major learning off campus may find it difficult to complete all group performance assessments. Additionally, these are predominately performance based assessments so a willingness to perform in form of others is required.

The Senior Drama course is a practical, fun and engaging way to explore our society through creation of original work, performance and the study of technologies. Students learn life skills such as how to work as part of a team, how to take criticism, problem solving, confidence and time management to name a few.   Students will explore the function of N.Z theatre and be consider if theatre educates, heals or entertains. There will also be an opportunity to look at theatre form and it’s place in our society today.

Students will learn how to apply the drama components: elements, conventions, techniques, and technologies, into a full scale public performance work and within a range of other scripted opportunities. Students will also be devising their own works and developing scripts as part of this. There will be opportunities to attend live theatre performances during the year this can be used as part of the optional external written exam.

There is also an out of class rehearsal commitment required as part of this course. It is expected that students will develop skills in all areas but will complete between 12 and 18 credits for assessment. The class will be made up of Year 11,12 and 13 students who will assess on Level 2 or 3 credits. Please note at level 3 Drama is a UE approved subject and for a course endorsement at any level you will need to ensure you have 14 Drama credits over the year and 4 of these need to be from an external.
