Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Students will need basic water safety skills and confidence in the surf. Students do not need to be able to surf already . They may be wanting to learn to surf. Please discuss your level of confidence in the water with Mr Walter if you are unsure.

Coasties is a Level 1 course that uses riding waves, ( eg.surfing, kneeboarding, body surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding), as the context for learning. In this course you will access standards from Physical Education and Technology. This course will focus on the physical skills of riding waves, fitness for surf related sports, organising and running a surf competition, waves, surfcraft design - surfboard or handplane, making a wooden skimboard, handplane or surf related project. This is an exciting new course that will involve some trips to Waihi Beach and possibly Raglan and Whangamata.

The cost of the camps is approximately $150 (two camps at $75 each).

The cost of materials will depend on the project chosen (between $10 and $80).

Students will also require a full-length wetsuit suitable for surfing in winter.
