Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

Yr 10 and/or Yr 9 Art, or with other relevant experience, with HOF of Arts approval. If you are keen to try new things, you will be able to achieve.


Visual Arts course offers students the opportunity to earn 15 credits while exploring a range of artistic techniques and mediums. This program provides a comprehensive approach to both traditional and contemporary art-making conventions.

Key Features:

  • Artistic Exploration: Students will engage in various techniques, including printmaking, woodcuts, etching, sketching, painting, photography, colour theory, and toi Māori.

  • Medium Selection: For their final piece, students can choose their preferred medium, which will be showcased as part of a larger Art exhibition.

  • Sustained Artworks: Students are required to create a cohesive body of related artworks, presented as a single folio board, demonstrating their artistic development and conceptual understanding.

  • Art Trips: As part of their learning experience, students will go on at least two art-related trips, providing exposure to diverse artistic environments and practices.

  • Creative Expression: Ability to produce and present a final artwork in their chosen medium.
