Year 10 Materials Technology Fabric - Semester A

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms R. Cameron

Develop your sewing skills and the ability to follow patterns independently. Students will make a hoodie following a commercial pattern. Skills include sewing seams, overlocking, buttonholes, topstitching, making a casing and attaching ribbing. We will cover fabric choices, the cost of making vs buying a hoodie, reading a pattern and customising using applied design techniques and pattern adaptations. All materials will be supplied for this project. Students will have limited colour choices. All other projects will chosen by students and they will need to buy their own fabric, thread and maybe a pattern or other things such as a zip or buttons to complete their projects..

Course Overview

Term 1
Learn about different fabrics, fibres, construction methods and properties.
Review/learn basic sewing skills and use of the overlockers.
Develop your pattern reading and understanding skills.
Learn how to customise your hoodie with design details, colour choices and applied designs.
Make and evaluate your finished hoodie.

Term 2
Investigate fabrics for different purposes and make another item or garment.
Record your work in progress and evaluate the finished product.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

$30 materials fee for hoodie fabric
Students will choose their projects and are responsible for organising and buying their own fabric for them.
