Coasties is a Level 1 course that uses riding waves, ( eg.surfing, kneeboarding, body surfing, bodyboarding, paddleboarding), as the context for learning. In this course you will access standards from Physical Education, Social Sciences and Technology. This course will focus on the physical skills of riding waves, fitness for surf related sports, organising and running a surf competition, waves, man-made waves, plastics in the ocean, surf forecasting, surfcraft design - surfboard or handplane, making a wooden surfboard or handplane. This is an exciting new course that will involve some trips to Waihi Beach and possibly Raglan and Whangamata.
It is recommended that this course is taken as a full year (Semester A and Semester B) as this will allow enough time for students to make their own surf craft - wooden surfboard or handplane.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Approximate cost for making a wooden alaia surfboard - $90
Approximate cost for making a wooden handplane - $40
NB: Students would only make one or the other and only if taking Semester A and Semester B.

This course will also have some other costs associated with transport to Waihi Beach, Raglan and Whangamata. There is a possibility of an overnight camp in Raglan or Whangamata.
